Wolfie had spent almost the entire month of August parked at a storage unit in Las Vegas. I was excited to finally get back into the camper and make our way to Kanab, Utah. Passing through the corner of Arizona along the way, we earned two more state stickers. In Kanab, we were rewarded with amazing views and brand-new facilities at the Grand Plateau RV Resort. My favorite part were the dark skies and clear nights which allowed me to see every star in the universe.
The Grand Canyon is just a big hole in the ground, claims someone in a bad Yelp review of it. While technically true, it is something magical that you have to see in person. Pictures just can’t do it justice as it is also something powerful and awe-inspiring you feel when standing at the edge. I drove down from Kanab and unfortunately picked the worst air quality day to visit the North Rim. I started off at Grand Canyon Lodge and what’s cool is that you can’t see it until you get to the other side of the lodge and then there it is. I hiked to the Bright Angel Point Trail for amazing views of the canyon.
I drove out to Point Imperial, the highest point on the North Rim, to get a different view of the canyon.
I was told by a Park Ranger that the air was supposed to clear up as the day went, so I opted for a long walk in the forest to get out of the heat of the sun. I went on the 4.2 mile out and back hike to Cape Final. It wasn’t the best view of the canyon, however after weeks in the desert I needed to be amongst the trees and I had the trail to myself which I really enjoyed. The universe knew that I wanted to sit on a rock overlooking the Grand Canyon and ponder life, so it provided the opportunity. When I arrived at Cape Final lookout there was the question of ‘How does time change your perspective?’ and a box of paper and pencils to leave your thoughts behind. With no one around for miles, I enjoyed my view and reflected on how time has broadened and deepened my perspective, the same effect the river has had on the Grand Canyon.
As the sun got lower in the sky it was off to Angels Window where I could finally start to see the other side of the Canyon. This is also one of the few spots on the North Rim where you can see the river below way off in the distance.
I had saved what I believe to be the best view for last. I ended my scenic drive at Cape Royal. The lookout point provides views out to rock formations called Vishnu Temple and Wotan’s Throne. It was the perfect way to end the day.
I had two extra days to spend exploring Kanab and surrounding area. The town is the hub of the Wild West and many Western movies were filmed in the area. I visited Moqui Cave which houses an interesting collection of artifacts. It has been owned and operated by the Chamberlain family for over 50 years. A member of the Chamberlain family gave me a tour, sharing family stories. The bar was created as the movie stars in town complained that there was no place to cool off and have a cold beer after a long day on set. It became a popular spot for the cast of Gunsmoke.
