I admit to being highly influenced by tv commercials and I have always remembered those Pure Michigan commercials about Mackinac Island. Staying in the Upper Peninsula, I took the ferry to the island for a relaxing day on the island. It is like stepping back in time, as you explore the island which has no vehicles, only horse-drawn carriages and bicycles.

I was lucky enough to visit at the same time that the Lilac Festival was happening so there was an explosion of color and there was the sweetest smell in the air. While my preferred mode of transportation is my hiking boots, it was time to see if I remembered how to ride a bike. Without the threat of getting hit by a car, I had the best time riding around the island and exploring the sites. It was one of the most relaxing days. And when not riding bikes and sightseeing, it is a requirement that you explore the dozens of fudge shops. This just might be heaven. I timed my touring correctly and was lucky enough to be up at Fort Mackinac for the daily firing of the cannon. I walked up to the Grand Hotel, but wasn’t able to take a peak inside as it was closed to guests only. Overall, highly recommend a visit to the island.
