It was time to leave Moab and explore the remainder of the National Parks. It was a beautiful drive to Capitol Reef National Park passing the coolest rock formations and all the desert colors.
The area was settled in the 1880’s by Latter-Day Saints and orchards and pastureland created. When it became a national park a decision was made to keep the orchards, so I enjoyed apple picking and then found a spot to enjoy a picnic. It was nice to be joined by a family of deer so that I didn’t have to eat alone.
I continued on to Escalante, Utah and stayed at the amazing Old Bailey Place. It is a fully restored 1890 pioneer cabin complete with clawfoot tub and outdoor shower (amazing after a day of hiking). The owners are amazing and supplied me with fresh baked bread and snacks and all kinds of amazing recommendations and history of the area. The best part was sitting on the porch and watching the swarm of hummingbirds that were there. I am not kidding when I say swarm.
The next day I explored the area by truck, enjoying a scenic drive down the Burr Trail Road. The views along the roads are incredible.
It was then back to Capitol Reef for a full day of hiking. It was also my birthday and couldn’t think of a better way to enjoy my birthday than hiking in the national park. I started off with a hike down the Grand Wash Trail (look for the tiny people walking ahead of me). With its steep cliffsides it provided relief from the summer heat. It was then on to Hickman Bridge trail. The name Capitol Reef is based on a huge white dome rock formation that reminds people of the capitol building in DC.
Everything can appear at an angle as the land was uplifted and formed the Waterpocket Fold. I took in the views at Gooseneck Overlook and hiked out to Sunset Point Trail.
I stopped in Boulder, Utah on my way home and rewarded myself with an amazing birthday dinner at Hell’s Backbone Grill and Farm. I was even treated to more dessert by the owner of the home who is an amazing cook. Ended the day standing outside staring at the Milky Way and billions of stars.
